Digital Rectal Exam (DRE)

Doctor inserts a gloved and lubricated finger into the rectum. Allows the doctor to feel the back portion of the prostate gland for size, and any irregular or firm areas. All men are encouraged to go for screening. Do not fear the finger, one finger can save your life.

Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA)

Sometimes DRE is not accurate at determining PC that is situated deep within the gland. For this reason DRE is usually augmented with the PSA blood test. Blood test is done to determine if PSA levels are within the normal range. The reason why this test is done is that; Prostate cancer cells growth as well as benign enlargement of the prostate (BPH) or inflammation/infection or prostatitis) can the PSA level in the blood. However, men can be diagnosed with prostate cancer even with a PSA in the normal range.
